CBS NEWS: PURVEYOR OF BALANCED REPORTING OR RATINGS-DRIVEN

SENSATIONALISM? / "60 MINUTES II" PIECE ON ABORTION-RELATED VIOLENCE RESCHEDULED TO AIR APRIL 14 AT 9 P.M.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On April 14 at 9 p.m. ET, CBS's "60 Minutes II" will air a segment on Michael Bray, the Maryland-based "pastor" who supports shooting abortionists. Early on March 31, the previously scheduled date, Family Research Council's National Advocate, Janet Parshall, issued a statement calling on CBS to "present the issue of abortion-related violence in a fair and balanced manner by providing significant commentary from leaders in the prolife community." CBS cancelled the Bray segment that night and replaced it with a President Clinton interview.

FRC's policy analyst on life issues, Teresa Wagner, esq., urged CBS Wednesday to "clearly point out that those advocating violence are not pro-life and in no way represent the pro-life community, which has consistently and unequivocally spoken out to denounce the use of violence.

Wagner said, "CBS should avoid broadcasting a report that does not meet basic journalistic standards. That would be a disservice to the American people, who deserve straightforward and balanced reporting.

"It is more than ironic that CBS chooses to cover violence and abortion, but apparently not say one word about the killing of Lou Anne Herron, whose death occurred exactly one year ago this week. Herron was a 33-year-old mother who died by a botched abortion at the Women's A to Z Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. She was the second woman to die at the hands of abortion practitioner John Biskind, who was arrested on manslaughter charges in January. She is one of an alarming number of women to have died from abortion in our country in recent years. You would never know this from national news sources, however.

"Too often, some newsrooms appear dedicated to the myth of safe abortion, even at the price of women's lives. The real news is that America's abortion business is dangerous for mothers as well as children."

[Ed: In other words, "millions of slain babies may not be serious enough to justify statements like 'someone oughta stop those guys', but when they start killing a few dozen mothers, wow, you might want to get CONCERNED about THAT." I'm not sure how much spiritual power there is in that approach.]
